Well, the Mapes family rolled out a little late from Pennsylvania, but the pouring rain slowed us down a little bit in the morning. At 6:30 we pulled out and headed west. We crossed Ohio and Indiana with no problems, just quite a bit of construction projects. We also took a detour into Michigan briefly at Sturgis, where I used to live, to get something to eat.
Illinois almost did us in, though. We apparently should not have taken I-90 into Chicago, but a different route. We spent about 2 1/2 hours driving (or more aptly, parked) between the east edge of Chicago to O'hare. After that, we cruised right along. Chicago also milked us for tolls every few miles. We're going to try to avoid that next time!
We hit Wisconsin and felt like we were in Pennsylvania again. Rolling hills, farms, very green. We made it to La Crosse, Wisconsin by 8:30 local (9:30 home), 15 hours (!) after we left, only traveling 750 miles or so. We didn't make great time, but we were sure glad to get here.
The kids did great, and we didn't even hear "I'm bored" from Aaron once. Today we're checking out La Crosse, the Mississippi River, driving into Iowa briefly and then on to Minnesota.
Awesome!
